Kochi to Wayanad Weekend Trip: Route, Timing and Plan

The drive from Kochi to Wayanad covers roughly 270 kilometres, but the character of the route changes noticeably depending on which way you go. The Thrissur–Kozhikode coastal-adjacent route trades a longer distance for wider, faster roads through most of its length, while the Palakkad route cuts inland earlier and takes you up through hill sections sooner. Neither is dramatically better; the right choice usually comes down to your preferred pace and where you would like to stop along the way.

This guide sets out both route options, realistic timing, and a two-day plan based at Mananthavady, which suits arrivals via the Kozhikode–Kalpetta ghat road better than a more southerly Wayanad base would.

Route Option 1: Via Thrissur and Kozhikode

This route runs Kochi – Thrissur – Kozhikode – Kalpetta (via the Thamarassery ghat) – Mananthavady, and is the more commonly used option, largely because the roads for most of the distance are wide National Highway stretches with good surface quality.

• Kochi to Thrissur: around 1.5 hours on NH66, generally smooth
• Thrissur to Kozhikode: around 2–2.5 hours, continuing on NH66
• Kozhikode to Kalpetta via Thamarassery ghat: around 1.5–2 hours, with a series of hairpin bends climbing into Wayanad — scenic but requiring careful, unhurried driving
• Kalpetta to Mananthavady: around 45 minutes to an hour further north

Route Option 2: Via Palakkad

An alternative runs Kochi – Thrissur – Palakkad – Nilambur – Sulthan Bathery direction, cutting inland earlier. It can suit travellers who prefer a more direct hill approach and slightly less coastal-highway traffic, though the roads through the Nilambur and Sulthan Bathery stretch are narrower in sections and progress can be slower than the distance alone suggests.

• Kochi to Palakkad: around 2.5–3 hours via NH544
• Palakkad to Nilambur to Sulthan Bathery: around 2.5–3 hours through narrower, winding roads
• Sulthan Bathery to Mananthavady: around 1–1.25 hours

Departure Timing Advice

Unlike the Bangalore approach, there is no hard traffic-ban checkpoint on either Kochi route, which gives you more flexibility, but the Thamarassery ghat and the Nilambur–Sulthan Bathery stretch are both best driven in daylight given the bends and occasional fog at altitude, particularly in the early morning during cooler months.

• For a Friday evening drive, a departure by early evening from Kochi should still get you to Mananthavady at a reasonable hour, though the ghat sections are more comfortable in daylight
• For a Saturday morning drive, leaving Kochi by 7–8am gets you to Wayanad by early-to-mid afternoon with stops
• Avoid tackling the Thamarassery ghat in heavy rain after dark; visibility drops considerably on the hairpins

Stops Worth Making Along the Way

• Thrissur, for a coffee or breakfast break roughly ninety minutes in
• A short pause at the base of the Thamarassery ghat before the climb, since stopping mid-ghat is neither easy nor advisable
• Lakkidi, near the top of the ghat, has a well-known viewpoint if you want a proper break after the climb

A Two-Day Plan Once You Arrive

Day 1 — Arrival and a Light Afternoon

As with any weekend drive of this length, keep the arrival day light. Check in at Mananthavady, rest, and use any remaining daylight for something nearby and low-effort, such as Kuruvadweep or a short Tholpetty visit, rather than committing to another long drive the same day.

Day 2 — Edakkal, Banasura and the Return

Day 2 works well as an Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagar Dam loop, both roughly 75–115 minutes from Mananthavady, before starting the return drive in the afternoon. Given the ghat driving involved on the way back, an earlier rather than later departure is the more comfortable choice.

The Thamarassery ghat rewards patience — the hairpins are not a place to make up time you lost sleeping in.

Budget Notes for the Drive

• Fuel for roughly 540 km round trip is the main variable cost beyond stay and food
• Toll costs on this route are generally lower than the Bangalore approach
• A self-drive car works well for this route; the roads are less demanding overall than the Bangalore drive, aside from the ghat section

What to Pack for the Drive

• Motion-sickness precautions if anyone in the car is sensitive to winding roads — the ghat section is where this tends to surface
• Water and snacks, particularly useful on the Palakkad route where stops are more spread out
• A light jacket for the noticeably cooler air once you climb into Wayanad
• An offline map as backup through the ghat sections where signal can be patchy
