If sunrise in Wayanad is about mist and stillness, sunset is about colour. The Western Ghats catch the last light in shades that shift by the minute, and the district has no shortage of places to watch it happen.
Banasura Sagar Dam
India's largest earthen dam is arguably Wayanad's best sunset venue. The last boat rides finish in the late afternoon, and the crowds thin quickly after, leaving the view over the reservoir and surrounding hills largely uncontested by the time the sky turns orange.
Kuruvadweep and the riverbank
The banks of the Kabini near Kuruva Island offer a quieter, greener sunset — less about a blazing sky and more about golden light filtering through bamboo and reed. It suits travellers who want fewer people and more birdsong.
The finest Wayanad sunsets are rarely photographed from a named viewpoint at all.
Chembra's lower slopes
While the summit trek closes to new entries in the afternoon, the lower viewpoints along the Chembra approach road catch spectacular light over the Meppadi valley, and are accessible without a permit or a long climb — a good option for travellers short on time or stamina.
Edakkal's rock ledges
The Edakkal Caves complex closes before sunset, but the road leading up to it, particularly the ledges near Ambukuthi Mala, offers uninterrupted views west over Sultan Bathery, and the descent in fading light past the ancient rock art site adds a certain gravity to the walk down.
Forest-edge stillness near Mananthavady
The northern belt around Mananthavady and Thalapuzha rarely appears on sunset-spot lists, largely because its best views are private rather than public — a resort deck, a plantation edge, a paddy field bund. At Jungle Edge Resort, evenings are often spent simply watching the light change over the tree line as the forest's evening chorus of insects and birds begins, no driving required.
Pookode and the tea country roads
The stretch of road between Vythiri and Lakkidi, cutting through tea and cardamom estates, offers pull-over sunset views that rival any official viewpoint, especially in the post-monsoon months when the air is clear and the greens are at their deepest.
A note on timing
Sunset in Wayanad falls earlier than travellers from further north expect, generally between 6.15 and 6.30pm year-round given the latitude. Plan to be in position at least thirty minutes before, since the most striking colour often appears in the ten minutes after the sun itself has dropped behind the ridge.
