Wayanad's mornings arrive slowly. Mist pools in the valleys long after the sky has lightened, and the sun often seems to negotiate its way over the Western Ghats rather than simply rise. This makes for some of the finest sunrise viewing in South India, provided you are willing to leave a warm bed before 5.30am.
Chembra Peak
The trek to Chembra's heart-shaped lake takes close to two hours, which means a sunrise attempt requires starting in the dark with a guide and a good torch. The forest department only opens the trail from around 7am, so a true summit sunrise is not officially possible — but an early first slot rewards you with the valley mist still sitting thick in the folds of the hills below, burning off in real time as you climb.
Lakkidi and the ghat road viewpoints
Lakkidi, the gateway to Wayanad from the Kozhikode side, sits at a natural vantage point over the ghats, and the unnamed pullouts along this stretch of road are locally treated as informal sunrise spots. Arrive by 6am and you will likely have the view to yourself, watching the plains below Kerala's ghats catch the first light while Wayanad itself stays in shadow a little longer.

Banasura Sagar Dam
The reservoir at Banasura Sagar turns to glass in the early morning, before wind picks up and boat traffic begins. Arriving for the 6am opening means catching the dam's namesake hill reflected almost perfectly in still water, a sight that disappears within the hour.
Tholpetty and the forest edge
For a sunrise with genuine wildlife odds attached, the roads bordering Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary near Mananthavady offer both light and the possibility of spotting elephant or gaur emerging to graze before the day's heat sets in. This is also the closest good sunrise ground to Thalapuzha, and guests at Jungle Edge Resort often need do no more than step onto the deck to watch the mist lift off the surrounding hills as the forest wakes.
Pookode Lake, before the crowds
Pookode is a midday tourist draw, but arrive before the gates officially open and the lake at first light, framed by tall evergreen forest, is a completely different, near-silent place. Ask locally about informal early access, since official visiting hours begin later in the morning.
Practical notes
Carry a torch, wear closed shoes with grip, and dress in layers — Wayanad's early mornings between November and February can dip into single digits at higher elevations. A flask of coffee is not a cliché here, it is a necessity, and most resorts, Jungle Edge included, will happily send one along with an early-departing guest.
