A Wayanad itinerary that respects the hairpins

Most Wayanad plans on the internet look great on a map and terrible in the car — they bounce you between north and south, burning half your holiday on ghat roads. This is the itinerary we actually hand our guests, grouped by region so you spend the days walking, not driving.

The one rule

Do all of North Wayanad (Tholpetty, Thirunelli, Kuruva, Banasura, Pookode) on one day and all of South Wayanad (Chembra, Soochipara, Edakkal, Meenmutty) on another. Mixing them costs 2–3 hours of hairpin driving each day.

The 2-day plan

A weekend that hits Wayanad's headline experiences — jeep safari, a proper trek, a waterfall swim, and one ancient site — without a rushed feel.

Day 1 — North Wayanad loop

North Wayanad
  1. 6:30 AM

    Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary jeep safari

First slot has the best sighting odds. Book the day before at reception; private cars aren't allowed inside.

  2. 10:00 AM

    Thirunelli Temple

Ancient hillside temple, 25 min from Tholpetty. Quiet mid-morning before tour buses arrive.

  3. 12:30 PM

    Lunch at the resort

Break the day here — the drives that follow are all under 45 minutes.

  4. 3:00 PM

    Kuruva Island

Bamboo-raft crossing to a river island. Closes at 5 PM sharp; last raft ~4:15.

  5. 6:30 PM

    Sunset from the resort deck

Campfire and dinner. You'll be glad you didn't drive further.

Day 2 — South Wayanad highlights

South Wayanad
  1. 6:00 AM

Drive to Chembra Peak base (~1 hr 30 min)

Permits cap at ~200/day and sell out by 9 AM in season — ask us to pre-book.

  2. 8:00 AM

    Chembra heart-lake trek

3 km up, ~2 hrs. Steep but not technical. Carry 2L water.

  3. 12:00 PM

    Lunch near Meppadi

Try a Malabar meals plate — Kerala thali with fish curry.

  4. 2:00 PM

    Soochipara Falls

3-tier waterfall with a deep swim pool. Grippy shoes; the last descent is slippery.

  5. 4:30 PM

    Edakkal Caves (last entry ~4:30)

8,000-year-old petroglyphs. Skip if you're tired — the ladder climb needs energy.

  6. 7:30 PM

    Drive back to resort

Aim to clear the ghats before dark; hairpin visibility drops sharply.

Add a third day

Three days is the sweet spot. Use the extra day to slow down, sleep in, and see the lakes — this is when Wayanad stops feeling like sightseeing and starts feeling like a holiday.

Day 3 — Slow morning, then the lakes

North Wayanad
  1. 8:00 AM

    Breakfast on the deck

Sleep in. The third day is for pace, not distance.

  2. 10:30 AM

    Banasura Sagar Dam (~45 min)

India's largest earthen dam. Take the small ferry to the island — quieter than the speedboats.

  3. 1:00 PM

Lunch at a Wayanad estate stay café

Coffee-plantation cafés around Padinjarathara serve fresh estate-roasted coffee.

  4. 3:00 PM

    Pookode Lake

Small freshwater lake, easy pedal-boat loop. Good for kids and older travellers.

  5. 5:30 PM

Lakkidi View Point (10 min stop)

Not a destination — a photo stop on the way back through the ghat.

  6. 7:00 PM

    Return to resort

    Campfire, dinner, early night.

Practical notes

  • Season: October to early March. Post-monsoon waterfalls without leech-and-landslide risk.
  • Transport: Hire a car with driver (₹2,500–3,500/day). Rentals struggle on the last-mile stretches.
  • Permits: Chembra and Tholpetty cap daily entries — book through us the day before.
  • Signal: Airtel and Jio hold up in most of the district; BSNL is patchier past Tholpetty.

Stay with us at Jungle Edge

The itinerary above is built around a stay at Jungle Edge in Thalapuzha — well placed for the northern loop, with the southern peaks a manageable hour away. Check availability directly, or reach out and we'll plan the days with you.
