Places to Visit in Wayanad: A Local's Guide

We've hosted travellers in the Wayanad hills for over a decade. This is the list we actually hand our guests at check-in — ten spots worth your day, with drive times from the resort, the season to go, and the small things most travel blogs miss.

How to plan your days

  • 3-day trip: Day 1 — Banasura Sagar + Pookode Lake. Day 2 — Edakkal Caves + Chembra Peak. Day 3 — Tholpetty safari + Thirunelli Temple.
  • Best season: October to early March. Post-monsoon waterfalls without the leech-and-landslide trade-off.
  • Getting around: Hire a car with driver for the day (~₹2,500–3,500). Most spots have rough last-mile stretches that rental scooters struggle with.

The 10 places worth your time

  1. 01

    Banasura Sagar Dam

India's largest earthen dam, ringed by misty hills

    Distance
    ~45 min from the resort
    Best time
    October to March, early morning

The reservoir's island clusters look unreal at first light. Pack a windbreaker — the dam crest gets gusty.

Local tip — Skip the speedboat queue and take the small ferry to the island for a quieter walk.

  2. 02

    Edakkal Caves

    8,000-year-old petroglyphs above Ambukuthi Hill

    Distance
    ~1 hr 15 min
    Best time
    Weekday mornings, October to February

One of the oldest known rock-art sites in India. The carvings of human figures and animals are still startlingly clear.

Local tip — Wear grippy shoes — the last stretch is a steep climb on iron ladders. Buy tickets online to skip the line.

  3. 03

    Chembra Peak

The heart-shaped lake trek, Wayanad's signature hike

    Distance
    ~1 hr 30 min
    Best time
    Post-monsoon (September to December)

The trek to the heart-shaped lake is short (about 3 km up) but steep. The summit view across the Western Ghats is worth every step.

Local tip — Permits are capped daily and sell out by 9 AM in season — ask reception to book ahead. Carry 2L water minimum.

  4. 04

    Soochipara Falls

Three-tiered waterfall with a deep natural pool

    Distance
    ~1 hr 45 min
    Best time
July to October for full flow

Locals call it Sentinel Rock Waterfalls. The walk down from the parking is steep but shaded.

Local tip — The pool below is safe for a dip in dry months. Skip during heavy rain — currents get dangerous.

  5. 05

    Meenmutty Falls

Three-stage 300-metre waterfall, off the tourist trail

    Distance
    ~2 hr
    Best time
    September to early December

The least-crowded of Wayanad's big falls. The final tier drops into a hidden basin you'll often have to yourself.

Local tip — Hire a local guide at the entry point — the trail isn't marked and one section involves a stream crossing.

  6. 06

    Pookode Lake

Freshwater lake framed by evergreen forest

    Distance
    ~1 hr 20 min
    Best time
Any time of year, golden hour

A gentler stop between bigger treks. The lake shape is said to resemble India's outline.

Local tip — Great for families with young kids — paddle boats, a small aquarium, and an easy 2 km loop walk.

  7. 07

    Thirunelli Temple

Ancient Vishnu temple in the Brahmagiri foothills

    Distance
~30 min — the closest of the lot
    Best time
    Sunrise visit

Believed to be over 1,000 years old. The setting — temple, stream, mountains in three directions — is the real draw.

Local tip — Combine with the Papanasini stream walk just behind the temple. Modest dress required; phones not allowed inside.

  8. 08

    Kuruva Island

62-hectare river island in the Kabini

    Distance
    ~40 min
    Best time
October to May (closed during monsoon)

Protected riverine forest, rare orchids and herbs, and almost no signal. The slowest two hours of your trip in the best way.

Local tip — Only bamboo rafts ferry visitors across — no motorboats. Carry insect repellent.

  9. 09

    900 Kandi Cliff

Sheer drop into a forested gorge, the newest viewpoint

    Distance
    ~2 hr 15 min
    Best time
    Clear winter mornings

One of Wayanad's most dramatic vistas. Far less crowded than Lakkidi or Chembra View Point.

Local tip — Last 3 km is a rough jeep track — book a local 4×4 from Mananthavady. Avoid in rain.

  10. 10

    Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Tholpetty)

Elephant, gaur and tiger country bordering Nagarhole

    Distance
    ~25 min from the resort
    Best time
Safari slots at 7 AM or 3 PM, October to May

Tholpetty is the quieter half of the sanctuary. Forest department jeeps only; private vehicles aren't permitted inside.

Local tip — Book the morning safari — wildlife sightings are dramatically better. Children under 5 aren't allowed.

A few honest things

  • Lakkidi View Point and the "tree tunnel" are pretty but overcrowded by 10 AM. Stop for ten minutes on the way in, not as a destination.
  • Skip the Glass Bridge / adventure parks if you've come for nature — they feel out of place here.
  • Wayanad is hill country: signal drops often, roads have hairpins, and shops close early. Plan fuel and snacks accordingly.

Stay with us

Jungle Edge sits inside the forest belt at Thalapuzha — well-placed for Tholpetty safaris, Thirunelli, and the lakes, with the bigger treks an hour or so south. Reach out on WhatsApp, call, or email and we'll plan the days with you.
